I got two gems from birds and placed two on the pillars, leaving the other two empty. when i went back a few days later with another gem i had received, the two I had placed had disappeared so I restarted the quest to try and get and place all 4 at once.Yes, there's 5 different gem possibilities (topaz, diamond, aquamarine, amethyst, emerald I think) that are randomised for everyone.
